Brushing your teeth is an essential part of one’s life. But are you brushing your teeth the proper way? Don’t worry, we are here to provide you with the proper brushing method to fight plaque, clean your teeth, and have a brighter and whiter smile.

The Proper Way To Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth helps in removing plaque and bacteria from the mouth and prevents cavity, tooth decay, and even periodontal diseases. The steps for properly brushing your teeth involves:

  • First, brush the outer surface of the teeth. Brushing gently the lower and upper parts of your teeth helps you in slowing down the process and prevents you from missing any spots.
  • Tilt your brush 45 degrees again to clean the gum line. It helps in removing trapped plaque and food debris from the gum line.
  • The inner surface of the teeth is not visible. So, brushing your teeth at a 45-degree angle back and forth is essential to clean the inside of the teeth.
  • Also, brush the top of your back teeth back and forth. That’s where a lot of food gets trapped.
  • Lastly, brush your tongue to remove any odor and have fresh breath.

Things to Know for Better Toothbrushing

Carrying out the proper technique for brushing your teeth is a considerable start for maintaining good oral hygiene. However, it is also crucial to have a proper brushing tool and avoid some basic mistakes. Here are some of the things you should know before brushing your teeth.

  • Always brush your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes each time. Gently go around all your teeth in a circular motion and ensure to give your teeth enough attention.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA) for removing any plaque or food debris. Small head toothbrushes reach all the areas of your mouth.
  • Several kinds of toothpaste are available in the market. From fighting cavities to whitening teeth to improving sensitivity, you can choose the best toothpaste that meets your needs. Moreover, you can also consult your dentist about choosing the right toothpaste for cleaning your teeth.
  • If you choose to overbrush your teeth, use a gentle touch when using your toothbrush. Overbrushing your teeth could lead to abrasion, gum recession, and sensitivity.
  • Lastly, buy a new toothbrush every three to four months. Also, change it after recovering from illness to avoid any infection.

With daily brushing and flossing of teeth, you can keep your smile fresh, healthy, and happy.
